This is a special time for our growing recovery advocacy movement. All across the country the recovery community has been registering voters, educating candidates, and working to recruit volunteers to help get out the vote in November. Election Day is almost here, and I am sure you have been catching glimpses of candidate tour buses, rallies, town hall meetings, and candidate debates. Sometimes, you even get a campaign jet coming through your local airport.

Ohio is getting special attention nationally because it is considered battleground states.

In the past weeks, and in the next month you will see a growing number of candidates, both local and national, coming through our state and sometimes even through your own neighborhood. Surrogates are also working to attend events in your communities to stump for their candidate of choice.

This is something we need to take advantage of as a strong constituency working to earn the support of candidates and show them that we are united in this effort to make Recovery Voices Count! Please take time to ask one of the 5 questions at a rally, wear Recovery Voices Count T-shirts, and get the attention of the campaigns. This e-mail is going out to all advocates because it is important to really look at the big picture of all of this. We are growing a constituency of consequence, and we need to be seen everywhere candidates go. Please feel free to forward this to everyone you know!

So, this is an official urgent call to action. Form teams of advocates, get involved, and let’s work together to find campaign events and communicate with each other on who is going to what event. Please take the time each day to either call a candidate headquarters to find out what events are happening near you, check the local papers, and pass the information on to other advocates.

For those in southwest Ohio, northern Kentucky and southeastern Indiana, please use this Recovery Advocacy Group as your contact, and call 513-751-8000, x. 18 or jstewart@DrugFreeCincinnati.org. We can help you find your local contact. We can connect you with groups like Ohio Citizens Advocates, Faces and Voices of Recovery Cincinnati and People Advocating Recovery as well as other groups.

For more information about what you can do, please click on the Get Involved page

If you would like to attend any planning meetings, please contact jstewart@drugfreecincinnati.org for details.
